pick high-gloss milled parts from a box

In this application, highly polished and freshly machined milled parts are removed from a 600x400x300mm KLT. An UR robot works here with our C series mobile on the robot flange together with the gripper.

The end customer has a high degree of automation in its production of the various process steps such as milling, cleaning, measuring and assembly. Bin picking is used to feed the finished milled parts to the next steps. At this stage of processing, the parts have a very high surface gloss as well as residual liquid in droplet form from the machining process.

In this application, our bin picking solution Mikado Control works together with our latest 3D camera, the C-Series. Our system recognizes the individual parts within the bin. It doesn't matter whether the parts are positioned directly next to each other without a gap, or whether they are tilted, twisted or otherwise chaotic in the bin. The appropriate grip is then evaluated and a collision-checked path for the robot is calculated.

The camera used is mobile and attached to the robot. This gives the overall setup great flexibility to empty the box as far as possible. The C series we use has a rounded design with as few corners / edges as possible. This helps with the risk assessment. An UR Cobot was used in this application, which is also equipped with two approach sensors. This makes the robot cell very compact, without a fence and wonderfully easy to operate.
